Finding the Winter Light xo

A flower in the light.

My friends, how do we bring light into the darkness? Some clients come to me during what feels like the darkest days, and like any healing light is welcome. They wish for a change, for a sign of hope that life can really be better for them, and sometimes they come as a last hope, like flinging spaghetti on the wall, hoping that something, somewhere, will stick and make a shift.

In dark times when the light is less and the world sleeps, it’s important for us to choose to adorn ourselves with light, and and to keep going with divine joy and grace, even a tiniest bit. When my clients come to me in this way, at this kind of acute time in their lives, we will often, together, create a tiny life "prescription" that they can carry with them into their journey after our session, to continue the energetic shifts that we made together. This is an empowering and beautiful thing, and was taught to me by a dear friend. How does it work? Well, I’ll list it below but essentially it’s choosing joy in the darkness. Read on.

You can gently navigate your life to include more light, and gently shift your energetic landscape, without having to learn how to be an energy healer.

Maybe you won’t bring in the sun, and maybe you can’t anyways because you’re so tired. You’re exhausted; the sun is too much, anyways.

But maybe you can shift, or choose, one tiny candle. One choice for joy. That will make a difference in your Winter and will serve as your treasure map outta there.

I know this because I live this philosophy. And I know it can be hard yet essential, whether we’re in our winter or not.

I will share that winter came early this year for me and someone I love. It’s a snowstorm, or you could say it’s a dark and inky Alaskan night, taking over days and weeks. And so I have to choose, amid this inky darkness, to look up at the stars and gently, so gently, light a match, and then a candle. I do this with my hundreds of daily choices. My hands do it so that my heart can heal and act as my compass.

So, as I write this to you, I understand the ebb and flow of joy, winter, happiness, strength, weakness. All the things and beauties.

Because the thing about energy is that you can affect it by what you bring in, and by your deliberate actions.

Think of yourself as a Christmas tree. You can bring in antique birds, lights, small gifts, joy. Or you can bring in difficult things. Each choice affects you in a different way. Whether you’re in a winter or not.

So, my little bit of advice is, as you reach out into the world, that you select the joy that she holds before you.

And be selective with your precious energy and the things that you bring into your life.

Recently I did a small reading and discovered that my client watches scary movies. This is a selection that she is placing within her space. She’s placing this energy in her boughs, inviting it in. My mentor can’t (or, won’t) heal homes energetically where the clients watch scary films because they will simply bring in again whatever she healed. Or worse.

Use this knowledge as power. Reach out for beauty, joy, healing, light.

The light in the dark.

Here’s a sample of my prescription:

  • Comedy. Why? Amusement is a deeply healing energy tool and thus, it’s not only about “making you laugh,” it’s about creating energetic shifts throughout your space. Select your how and do it. Schedule it, if you have to. Listen to Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me, watch funny movies, read funny books.

  • Beauty. Place yourself in beautiful spaces, where and when you can. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but whatever that means to you, do it.

  • Little comforts. What is a tiny gift to you? What do you deny yourself? For me, it’s the latte right next to me–that is my gift to self. Can you gift to self and in what small way? Also, for  me, it’s just comfort clothes.

  • Doing the joy in a small way. What has your heart wanted you to do, or what does it lean towards? Here we invite it in. If you have always wanted to do Calligraphy, then look at Calligraphy on Instagram. Watch Rajiv Surendra on YouTube, go to Skillshare if you feel bold. But usually I recommend the Instagram because it’s such a small step, it’s easy to let yourself do.

I am, for example, taking up Calligraphy. I own Calligraphy books that I’ve never actually opened. I seem to buy them over the years and collect them so that I can dream, like lottery tickets. “Maybe one day I can do hand lettering. I love that dream.” I own brush pens. I own all the things! I’m in my mid-life and never followed that thread. So now I sit, next to my child as he plays, and make strokes. Thick, thin, curved. And those few pages…

Satisfy my soul.

They’re wonky, to be sure. But they’re beautiful, too. Elegant. Satisfying.

This is one way that we bring ourselves out of the ruts of our lives and into more joy. You can come see me, or another healer, and you can also do these baby steps to bring in some light. I am doing these AND I saw a healer, my mentor, and am grateful. It all feels good.

What are your lights? What tiny things have you always wished you did, that you could dip your toes in? If you took this “prescription” and made it yours, what would you do and how would you do it?

Drop me a line and let me know. I’d love to hear. Then you can start doing it now, or tuck it in a drawer somewhere to help guide you when you need it.

I’m wishing you love, hugs, happiness, health, wealth, and all of the wonderful things.

Big hugs,

-P xo
